Life Story for Karen Louise Ueberrhein (Bunz)
Karen Louise Bunz Ueberrhein was born on August 10, 1953 in Omaha, Nebraska to Ted and Erma (Bock) Bunz. She grew up in Bennington where she attended grade school and graduated from Bennington High School in 1971. Karen was active in sports all of her life including volleyball captain her senior year and softball and during her college years at Midland, she played on the Women’s Basketball team. Karen was active in the school band, pep club, choir and was Valedictorian of her class. She was involved in 4-H and helped around the farm. She graduated from Midland College with Bachelor’s Degrees in Education and in Physical Education.
Karen married John Ueberrhein on August 27, 1983 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, Nebraska and they were blessed with two sons: Ryan and Jason. Karen and John have made their home on the family farm north of Valley.
Karen worked as a teacher at Rising City and Gibbon, Nebraska before getting married and raising her family. After the boys were older, Karen went back to teaching. First as a substitute, then full time before retiring in 2013 to be able to spend more time with her mother. Karen was a high school volleyball referee and coached basketball, volleyball, track and soccer. As a substitute, she worked at Valley, Waterloo and District #15, #23, #24, #41 country schools. Karen was an avid Husker fan, a talented photographer and enjoyed traveling. She was a member of United Faith Community Church in Valley, where she was the director of Christian Education and Vacation Bible School director and served as president of District #23 (Elm Tree) Country School. Karen was organized, detail oriented, patient, positive and determined. She was patriotic and held tight to her values of faith and family. Karen was always ready to help someone in need and put the needs of others before those of her own. Karen nurtured many strong and life-long friendships from every stage of her life. Her strongest pet peeve was the use of improper grammar and she could often be heard saying “park your carcass” or “draggin’ my wagon”.
Karen passed away on Wednesday, February 08, 2017 at her home in Valley, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Ted and Erma and brother Roger. Karen is survived by her husband John; sons and daughter-in-law Ryan and Lindsey of Elkhorn and Jason of Valley; sister-in-law Alice Bunz of Bellevue and nieces Katie Miller and Kim Cowman;
