Life Story for Steven S. Nichols
Steven Stacy Nichols was born on September 26, 1970 in Des Moines, Iowa to Stanley and Mary (Chapman) Nichols. He was raised in Harlan, Iowa where he attended grade school and graduated from Harlan High School in 1989. Steve received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in May of 1993 with a double major in Finance/Banking and Financial Markets. As a young boy, Steve was active in all sporting activities and anything competitive, goofing off with his friends and working at HyVee. He was a member of the UNO football team as the placekicker.
Steve married Toni Kathryn Weihs on September 9, 1995 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa and they were blessed with two daughters: Josie and Carly. Steve and Toni have made their home in Des Moines, Iowa, Green Bay Wisconsin and Omaha before moving to Elkhorn in 1999.
Steve has worked as President, CEO and Director at American Interstate Bank and Chief Financial Officer for Prime Communications. He enjoyed spending time laughing with family and friends, attending football games, live music, golf and arguing about ways to make the racecar faster. Steve grew up around race cars and after moving to Elkhorn worked on the pit crew for his friend Brian Kenkel. He was an intelligent, witty, forward thinking man with a stubborn streak and tremendous dedication to his family. Steve worked to help local people and causes that would improve the quality of life in our community and was focused on providing his girls with the tools and resources to “live happily ever after”. Steve enjoyed movies, especially mindless comedy, live music performances and was an avid sports fan, supporting the Minnesota Vikings, Iowa State Cyclones, Elkhorn Antlers, Harlan Cyclones, UNO Mavericks and whoever was playing against Nebraska. He enjoyed many pets from an early age, mostly dogs but did give into a family cat at the persistence of Carly. Steve and Toni were honored by the Western Douglas County Chamber of Commerce in 2013 as Volunteers and Citizens of the Year. He enjoyed ice cream and Funyuns (not at the same time), a cold diet Mountain Dew and dinner out at Charlestons, Boyd and Charlies and El Bees.
Steve passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at his home in Elkhorn, surrounded by his family at the age of 46 years, 6 months and 18 days. Steve is survived by his wife Toni; daughters Josie and Carly; parents Stan and Mary of Harlan, IA; Siblings Linda (Robert) Holst of Omaha, Lisa Nichols of Austin, TX and Mike (Anita) Nichols of Harlan, IA; father-in-law Wilfred Weihs;
