Life Story for James Rexford Barker
James Rexford Barker was born on March 28, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska to Rexford and Irene (Hendrix) Barker. He grew up in Omaha where he graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1952. As a young boy, Jim enjoyed riding his bike, gardening with his grandmother, swimming and caddying for his father. He worked his paper route for many years. Jim served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War.
Jim married Noreen Langan on June 7, 1958 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska and they were blessed with five children: Rex, John, Ann, Mary and Thomas. Jim and Noreen raised their family in the Elkhorn area.
Jim worked in Seattle in the logging industry and on a fishing boat. After moving back to Omaha, Jim worked as a television repairman before starting Seat Cover Center of Nebraska. This was the pre-eminent auto upholstery business in Omaha for over 50 years. He retired from the business when he was 80 years old. Jim loved to tinker with antique cars, play golf, garden and mow the acreage where he lived. Jim and Noreen were active in the Elkhorn Jaycees and in many church activities at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was a kind-hearted, trusting, and honest family man.
