Life Story for Donald Clarence Heldt
Donald Clarence Heldt was born on May 12, 1942 in Wahoo, Nebraska to Clarence and Irene (Kirchmann) Heldt. He grew up on the family farm near Yutan where he attended country school and graduated from Yutan High School in 1960. Don went on to attend the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship. As a young boy, Don enjoyed horseback riding, baseball, basketball and football. Don served in the Nebraska Army National Guard from 1965 to 1970.
Don married Nancy Ryan on February 15, 1969 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska and they were blessed with three sons: Don, Matthew and Todd. Don and Nancy lived in Omaha for a short time before moving to Yutan to raise their growing family.
Don played baseball for the New York Yankees in their minor league farm system. He held sales positions in the sporting goods and car indurstries before selling lumber for Hines Lumber Company. He founded Heldt Horse Feed in the mid 1970's which allowed him to be around one of his lifetime passions - horses. He loved everything about horses from riding and raising them to training and racing. Don’s prize horse was ITANDREAM, who was the Nebraska Filly of the year in 1982. He was athletic and excelled at many sports and continued to play baseball and softball for many years. Don was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. He enjoyed Rhubarb pie with a hot cup of coffee. He spent untold hours baling hay in the native meadow down by the Platte River.
Don passed away on Saturday, December 02, 2017 at his home near Yutan, Nebraska at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 20 days.
