Life Story for Edward "Allen" Noyes

Edward "Allen" Noyes was born November 6, 1934 in Valley, Nebraska to Ed and Mona (Speer) Noyes. He grew up in rural Valley, attending District #22 School through 8th grade. He always said he was the smartest boy in his class-he was the only boy in his class till entering Valley High School. He was a good student and excelled in shop building things. He graduated from Valley High School in 1952.
Closest neighbors and friends growing up were Terry Lewis; Bob Lewis, Ed Lewis and Jim Freeman. The boys played baseball; basketball and spent many hours playing ball in one barn or another.
Allen’s first job was always farming for his Dad but he took on jobs with every farmer in the area. He was always in demand for hard jobs and long hours.
When Allen met Pat Walz at her Mother’s store in King’s Lake, they began a courtship which family thought was too young. They married in 1953 and would have celebrated their 65th anniversary on February 19, 2018. They were blessed with three children: Michael, Edward and Kathy. The family always lived in the Valley area but moved to the family farm in 1963, continuing the family tradition of truck gardening/orchard which began with his Mom & Dad.
Allen worked as a metal worker/foreman at Fruehauf Liquid Bulk Tank for thirty-four years. He and Pat had many good friends, special friends Bruce and Donna Montague; Earl and Bev Buckner; Judy and Jerry Mink; Bob Gutzwiller and Ordie Vecchio .
When Allen retired from Fruehauf, their orchard, Wayside Farm, was already 15 years in the making, reaching 400+ trees. All trees were pruned yearly to exact specifications with spraying just as the Nebraska guide would support. The truck garden produced many thousands of watermelons, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes and peppers, adding 2000 asparagus plants later on.
Dad would grow and Mom would sell. They came to know and became friends with many of their customers through the years, many who enjoyed their yearly visits to the farm.
Allen and Pat hosted most family dinners. Food was always delicious and plentiful with produce from the gardens.
Allen was not a social person but enjoyed family dinners; picnics at Two Rivers or Memphis Park; Fremont State Lakes. He shared his love of fishing with his grandsons, getting them started with fly fishing equipment.
He was a great pool player-practicing daily and could make most any shot. He shared that love with his sons and grandsons, Craig and John, and enjoyed many a game.
In retirement, Allen and Pat enjoyed traveling, often visiting family in Arizona or Colorado. Memorable trips included two cruises to Alaska and Glacier National Park.
Allen died on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Shalimar Gardens after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mona Noyes. Allen is survived by his wife, Patricia; sisters and brother-in-law Shirley and Herb Harris, Woodbine, IA and Carolyn of Valley; sons: Michael of Valley; Ed and Jerrie Noyes of Fairfield, IA; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Ron Keiser, Waterloo, NE; and grandchildren: Craig and Autumn Keiser of Sioux City, IA and John Keiser, Valley, NE.
